Community college association among education groups warning about dangers of a Con-Con

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Community Colleges Association (MCCA) today announced its opposition to a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con), joining other prominent education groups in Michigan working together to urge a vote NO on Proposal 1 on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The MCCA, which represents 31 public community and tribal colleges across Michigan, joins the Michigan Education Association (MEA) and the Michigan Association of State Universities in their work with Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests (PMCFSI) to encourage Michiganders to vote NO on calling a Constitutional Convention. The question appears on the ballot every 16 years and asks voters whether to call a Con-Con, which would open the state constitution to a total rewrite. 

The MCCA serves more than 295,000 students as of 2025 and is focused on post-secondary education and talent development.

“Michigan’s community colleges work closely with local employers to provide affordable education and workforce training that meets regional needs,” said Brandy Johnson, president of the Michigan Community Colleges Association. “A Constitutional Convention could jeopardize the local flexibility colleges rely on to respond quickly to changing workforce and economic needs, creating uncertainty for employers and Michiganders seeking good-paying jobs.”
