SBAM joins coalition of prominent business organizations, other groups urging NO vote on Con-Con
LANSING, Mich. – The Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM) is joining other prominent business organizations in the Great Lakes state urging Michiganders to vote NO on Proposal 1 on the November ballot, which will ask whether to convene a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con).
SBAM, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Business Leaders For Michigan and a handful of regional chambers of commerce are among a growing number of business advocacy organizations working with Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests (PMCFSI) to encourage a NO vote on a Con-Con, which appears on the ballot every 16 years.
“Michigan’s small businesses are already dealing with higher costs and workforce shortages, alongside recent ballot proposals that threatened tax increases and new compliance requirements,” said Brian Calley, President & CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan. “Opening the Constitution now would add even more uncertainty. A Constitutional Convention would create confusion, stall growth, and make it harder for communities across Michigan to thrive.”
SBAM represents more than 33,000 small businesses in all 83 counties across both peninsulas.
A Con-Con would open the state constitution to a complete rewrite, which would allow partisan delegates to change or eliminate laws and regulations behind closed doors. SBAM is among those warning that a Con-Con would create an uncertain environment making Michigan vulnerable to unintended consequences that could place strain on small business growth.
PMCFSI is continuing to grow its supporter network. Additional information is online at protectmiconstitution.com.
