Prominent progressive groups, including MDP’s LGBT&A Caucus, join diverse lineup urging NO vote on Con-Con

LANSING, Mich. – The coalition of advocacy groups urging Michiganders to vote NO on calling a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con) continues to grow with the addition of several prominent progressive organizations, including the Michigan Democratic Party’s LGBT and Allies Caucus (LGBT&A), the GABA Foundation and Michigan United Action.

“A Constitutional Convention could allow extremists to rewrite our state’s foundational governing document and take away Michiganders’ hard-fought rights and protections,” said Jerron Totten, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party’s LGBT&A Caucus. “A Con-Con puts at risk all the protections and freedoms Michiganders currently enjoy under our state constitution, which is why we urge people to Vote No on Proposal 1.”

MDP’s LGBT&A caucus organizes LGBTQ+ voters and advocates for policies that promote equality across Michigan. The Livonia-based GABA Foundation connects Michigan communities, businesses and groups with African and Caribbean ties to opportunities in those parts of the world.

“Our organization is committed to expanding economic opportunities in Michigan with communities across the globe, and we are concerned about the uncertainty and chaos caused by a Constitutional Convention,” said Rhonna-Rose Akama-Makia, president of the GABA Foundation. "A Con-Con could derail pro-growth programs for years, hurting small businesses and their ability to create new jobs.”

Michigan United Action develops the leadership of our members to eradicate the root causes of racial and economic injustice.

“Michigan voters have wisely rejected a Con-Con repeatedly and by wide margins, and we are among a broad coalition of organizations urging them to do the same in November,” said Ken Whittaker, executive director of Michigan United Action. “Extremist groups and wealthy donors could exploit a Con-Con, locking out the voices of everyday Michiganders and rewriting our state’s governing document in ways that could hurt the freedoms and rights all Michiganders enjoy.”

These groups are among dozens of organizations working with Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests(PMCFSI) to encourage a NO vote on a Con-Con, which appears on the ballot every 16 years. The NO coalition includes Michigan's largest chambers of commerce and business organizations, conservative and religious groups, environmental and social justice advocates, and more.

PMCFSI is continuing to grow its supporter network. Additional information is online at protectmiconstitution.com.
