Michigan College Access Network among education groups warning about risks of a Con-Con

The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) today announced its opposition to a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con), joining other prominent education groups in Michigan working together to urge a vote NO on Proposal 1 on the Tuesday, Nov. 3 ballot.

MCAN joins the Michigan Community College Association and the Michigan Association of State Universities in their work with Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests (PMCFSI) to warn Michiganders about the risks to higher education by calling a Con-Con. The question appears on the ballot every 16 years and asks voters whether to call a Con-Con, which would open the state constitution to a total rewrite.

“MCAN joined the Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests coalition because we must protect Michigan students' expanded opportunity and reduced barriers to education – not having our state's constitution rewritten by special interests - which may not be focused on our priority students,” said Ryan Fewins Bliss, executive director of MCAN. “A Constitutional Convention could create incredible uncertainty around the policies and protections that help Michigan families and communities thrive. Organizations should be working together to build on what's working, not risk undoing it through the Pandora’s Box created by a Con Con. We’re recommending a No Vote on Prop 1.”

MCAN works to make college accessible to all Michiganders by increasing college readiness, participation and completion, especially among low-income students, first-generation college students and students of color.
